Newtendo

Back in 5 February 2004, Eagan Rackley rocked the Newton Collective with the exciting news of a Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) emulator for the Newton.

This enthusiastic programmer then released a flurry of versions before his interests moved on to other things in early 2005.

I started using it fairly early on in the piece but uninstalled it eventually because it was too addictive and I had to get on with my other responsibilities [sigh]. But you don't have to!! So here are the steps required to get Newtendo on your machine:

A. Get a NES ROM:

There are tons of sites where you can download them. Here is one for example: http://www.freeroms.com/nes.htm

B. Create an MP2x00 compatible pkg from any NES ROM:

Submit your NES ROM to the NES Packager at http://misato.chuma.org/nespackager/index.php
At this point in time, it only seems to produce 0k sized packages so something is broken. If you need a converted ROM, and until its fixed, you can download it from here.

C. Install it all on your Newton:

Just install

  1. newtendo.pkg
  2. [romname].pkg
You're done.

D. Before you play the game

Rotate the screen so that it is in landscape mode, with the PCMCIA slots at the top.

After reading Eagan's mention of Zelda I thought I would give it a crack but couldn't get past the registration screen. How do you move the heart shape? Frank McHugh from Newtontalk suggested using the select button but that didn't work for me. Probably something really simple I'm missing...

Have fun...

Hi! I was wondering if you had any converted roms since the site is giving the 0k files out. Is there an external program that would produce the same result? Please email me at yacko6@gmail.com. Thanks for listening.
